They are starched paper wrapped with Mylar
and/or silk.
Because they have starch, you need to run them thru your fingers to break down
the starch a little bit to prevent kinking and get a nice smooth curve if that's
what you want... you can use them for decoration, macramé, lacing, etc. Strands
